Peacock’s General Store in East Amwell (Hopewell’s neighbor) burned down in a tragic fire Friday night. The store was a gem in our area and often used as a biker’s meet-up and a place for local neighbors to stop in and have a bite to eat while reading a paper. The building was also home to many who lived in the apartments upstairs. The 3-alarm fire started around 9pm Friday night and firemen worked tirelessly through the early morning to successfully contain the fire. The investigation for cause is still ongoing however no arson is expected at this point. Currently, the leading thoughts are that an electrical problem was the cause.
Although all the people made it out safely, many lost pets and everyone lost everything they physically had. There are currently a few outlets for the community to get together and support those in need. A Facebook page “Peacock’s Building Fire Relief & Community Connect” was created as a means communicate, lend a hand and support those who lost so much in this blaze. There are several online donation sites to help monetarily, including for the Maziri family who lost their business in the fire.
