Tortuga’s Mexican Village – Monday Bites

Tortuga’s Mexican Village

Some people call it Tortuga’s and others refer to it as “Mexican Village”. Tortuga’s Mexican Village, on Leigh Ave (at John St) in Princeton is a good choice for a quick lunch when you are craving “real” Mexican food. Tortuga’s Mexican Village is located across from Cafe 44 (their old location) and has a lunch menu ranging from $9-12 dollars a dish.

Food: House made chips and salsa will start you out and will be there before you know it. The first batch is on them but they will charge you thereafter. For lunch on a Monday or Tuesday expect a fresh cut salsa that might have sat for a couple days that has a decent flavor but not much heat.
Combinaciones are a great choice for lunch as they offer 1-3 classic items ($9-$12) stuffed with Chicken, Chorizo or Beef. Veggie stuffings include avocado, refried beans and cheese. Each combination platter comes with a choice of pinto or black beans and rice. You won’t really see any difference between the Burrito and the Enchilada. Both are presented in the same fashion so you might be confused as to what the difference is. Burritos come with a flour tortilla and have a slab of guac on top. They are baked in the same sauce as the Enchiladas so don’t expect something you can pick up with your hands. The rice and beans are seasoned well, not too salty and the chorizo has a good amount of heat. The chicken was pulled and moist and the red sauce it is served in is spot-on. After a few minutes of noshing your plate will be entirely empty.

Atmosphere: Fresh interior with high ceilings and a few scattered Mexican chachkies on the walls. The new space is clean, bright and maintains a simple comfortable vibe.

Service: Friendly, familiar faces that have been there for years. If they aren’t jamming you can be in and out of there is 25 minutes with a very full belly and some time to spare to grab a coffee across the street at Cafe 44.

The Drinks: BYOB.

The Last Bite: With so many “Fresh Mex” and “Tex Mex” chains around Princeton, it is great to see Tortuga’s is still in business with their classic Mexican home cooking. With equally fast service, you can expect to be in and out in less than 30 minutes. There is plenty of non-metered street parking on the surrounding streets. Tortuga’s is Cash-Only.
